I wonder if anyone would notice if you made a door unlock system that has sensors around the car:
sit on front bumper, get up, sit on front bumper again
set on rear bumper, get up, sit on rear bumper again
pull left door handle, go around
pull right door handle, go around
pull left door handle, go around
pull right door handle, go around
touch b-pillar
touch a-pillar
and then the doors will unlock. Now go start your car.

Hi yodudebc. Thank you for the information about the key tag. I did not realize that the VIN number which used to "define" a vehicle as to engine size, transmission type, etc. has now included the key number. No, keys from dealers are not cheap and they are getting more expensive and becoming "dealer only" items. My 2012 Chevrolet Sonic now has a switchblade type FOB with a laser cut key. I haven't found any locksmith that can make a key with the cut in the center of the key and not the outside edges. I had this type of key on a 2000 VW Passat. Their price for the FOB & key was $360.00. Chevrolet told me the Sonic's FOB key was $160.00. The VW's key could be ordered separately from the FOB, but I broke the FOB. I remember having a new Ford with a "smart" key. The blank was $16.00, but the dealer tried to charge me one hour labor to program it. He thought I hadn't read the Owner's Manual where it gave you the procedures to program up to five keys from the vehicle's computer.
Since I am posting this, I've thought about this subject and reviewed everyone's post. This topic is over one year old and I've learned much from everyone. The FOB or FOB/Key makes storage under the vehicle impractical. The magnetic key holder was never what I used, but mileena202 brought up an interesting point, that being that tow truck driver or a garage might see a key underneath the car and duplicate it and obtain your address. One gas buddy said it was not my business (I really wouldn't fly to Chicago to steal a car even if I knew where it was). I sense a distrust, and it may be that I am naive' about items like this. In my garage days, we laid all work orders out with the keys on top of the paperwork. The work orders did have names, addresses and telephone numbers on them, but that was in 1968 & 1969. Times and people have changed. There are few people who do not lock their car doors or leave the keys in the ignition. One GB mentioned explaining to the insurance company why your spare key was available to steal the vehicle. I used to carry a plastic credit card key in my wallet, but some of the newer keys prevent that option. Our lives have changed in 40 years and we seem to far less trusting and feel, rightly so, more vulnerable. Thanks GBs :-) .

No, I'd be locked out of house and car if I lost my keys...
I was locked out once at the airport when I locked my keys in the car. Luckily I was going to a destination that had a spare key so I grabbed that and all was good. Also lucky the car was a beater and nobody thought of stealing it... it was a free ride if they saw it...

Hi Titanic1985. In answer to your question about key numbers, I could not find one on my Toyota key. The dealer assured me that my VIN number was all that would be needed to order another key. And that would not be a cheap order, either.

I used to always have a spare key hidden behind the rear licence plate, secured by the screw. This went out with the advent of fobs. I now keep a valet key in my wallet, but I've never needed it as I always lock up with the fob.

When I had my vehicle parked in a park and ride lot at the airport; I locked my keys in the car deliberately. No sense in traveling with them.

Yes, I always carry one in my purse, and at home. I figure I will never forget my purse, so I know I will have a key to my car. Plus I use that one to give to a mechanic, so I still have a key for the vehicle in my possession at all times.
As for a magnet under the car, I would be scared that it would be knocked off on a bump or stolen by someone. Also, a mechanic or tow truck driver could notice it, and if he has your address too, he could steal your car at night sometime. Unlikely, but it happened to my aunt. She gave her address to some auto body shop near San Diego and left her car for a week to be repaired. A few weeks later, her car was stolen from her house and she is sure the shop made a copy of her key and came a few weeks later to steal it. Never give your home address to your mechanic!!!

Yup, I keep a spare car and house key in my wallet. Saved me a couple of times after being locked out.
Also keep a house key hidden in the garage. That saved me one time from having to kick a window in.
